Types Of Hair Dye

Many people including Beeunique staff can refer to semi-permanent hair dyes such as Directions and Manic Panic as ‘Vegetable Dyes’ – this is a widely used phrase used to describe these type of dyes and does not mean that they are made from vegetables or contain specific vegetable ingredients. It is a phrase we believe may have developed from certain brands of semi-permanent hair dyes being referred to as vegan friendly and therefore classed as hair dyes suitable for vegan’s or vegetarians. There are true vegetable dyes made from things such as Camomile and Henna but these tend to high-light or brighten natural shades in the hair rather than change it to the neon colours that Manic Panic, Directions and Stargazer dyes come in. 

A brief summary of some dyes types can be seen below:

Vegetable Hair Dyes:

These are made with plants such as Camomile and Henna – they tend to give more subtle changes to the hair with Camomile often being used to bring out ‘sun-kissed’ streaks to fair hair and Henna often bringing out red tones in darker hair. At this time Beeunique do not sell pure vegetable or permanent hair dyes so this is only a rough guide to these therefore please check with the seller of these kinds of dyes if you have any further questions on vegetable dyes.

Semi Permanent or Temporary Hair Dyes:

These are the types of dyes we currently sell and include Manic Panic, Adore,  Crazy Color and Directions. These dyes coat the hair shaft and temporary change the colour to shades such as red, pink and blue and these will eventually wash out. These dyes will not lighten the hair on their own and are best used on pre-bleached or light hair colours, when used on darker hair colours some shades may still show up or give a sheen of colour but you are best trying a strand test first. Permanent Hair Dyes:

Permanent hair dyes (often also called Box Hair Dyes) tend to penetrate the hair and permanently change the shade of the hair meaning the colour will then normally need to be bleached or grown out. These types of dyes can normally lighten the hair or change the colour drastically as they contain chemicals which allow the dyes to permanently alter the hair colour. These dyes can contain chemicals that can damage or dry out the hair and you should not use these types of dyes too often or at the same time as using another chemical treatment such as bleaching or perming.
