  • Special Effects Alternative Brands

    Special Effects Alternative Brands

    Special Effects Alternative Brands.
SFX closed in 2019 and very quickly all the remaining dyes sold out.  Any dyes you find now will be at least 4 years old so mix well and try a strand test if you buy one of these.

We still get almost weekly about hair dyes that are as vibrant and last as long as Special Effects!  Sadly there are none that truly compare to this wonderful and well-loved brand. Many people are importing brands from the USA such as Arctic Fox & Lunar Tides, Beeunique cannot stock these as the ingredients do not comply with EU rules.  This means the dyes should not be for sale or imported into the UK or Europe.

Peronally, from the brands we do sell I have found that Adore Hair Dyes have the closest colour range to Special colours.  They don’t last near as long but are a fair bit cheaper to buy so would be worth trying.  I have also found that Adore Hair Dyes are very easy to wipe off the skin with a face wipe unlike SFX that stained your skin for several days usually.

The colour from Special Effects that we are most asked about is the amazing Atomic Pink Hair Dye – this was UV reactive neon pink and lasted for months!  The longest lasting semi-permanent brand that is allowed in the UK & EU is Manic Panic and their Hot Hot Pink is a very close match to Atomic Pink colour-wise. From customer feeedback & reviews there are a few Headshot & hermans colours that are also close to this bright pink shade.

  • Semi Permanent Hair Dyes

    Semi Permanent Hair Dyes

Semi Permanent Hair Dyes – what are they?

We are often asked if the semi permanent dyes we sell are ‘vegetable dyes’ or if we sell permanent hair dyes.  The short answer to both is no, at present we only sell semi-permanent dyes.  The three main types of hair dye are Vegetable, Semi-Permanent & Permanent and a brief description of each of these can be seen below:

    Semi Permanent Hair Dyes:

This is the type of dye currently available on the Beeunique website.  These do not permanently change the hair colour but rather coat the hair shaft and temporary change the overall shade.  Semi-Permanent Dyes are often called ‘veggie’ dyes in relation to most of them being vegan friendly which could explain why many people confuse them with vegetable dyes which are in fact made from plants.

These type of dyes do not need mixed with anything, can be used straight away and contain no ammonia.  If you do not have light coloured hair or do not wish to bleach your hair you can still use these dyes but the results will not be as vibrant so best trying a strand test first.  Some of the deeper/darker hair colours may show up on unbleached hair but it is unlikely to be as vibrant as on lighter hair colours, and may only given a sheen of colour. We have a section in the Hair Dye Gallery showing how the colours can look on Unbleached Hair

Semi Permanent dyes can last anywhere from 1 wash to several months, it all depends on the brand, the colour being used as well as the porosity of your hair.  The following pages can help you further with how long each brand tends to last and how to get the best results from your dye – Hair Dye FAQ

    Vegetable Hair Dyes:

Vegetable hair dyes are made with plants such as Henna and Camomile.  They don’t tend to make more subtle changes to the hair and certainly not the kind of neon results brands like Manic Panic & Directions are known for.  Camomile is normally used to bring a sun-kissed look to hair, such as lighter streaks in fair hair whereas Henna usually brings out red tones in darker hair.  We do not currently sell these type hair dyes on Beeunique.

    Permanent Hair Dyes:

These type of dyes are often called ‘box dyes’ and they will permanently change the hair colour.  They usually contain chemicals to lighten the hair so can give drastic results to the hair.  Eventually the hair will need to be re-bleached, dyed over or grown out.  Some manufacturers make permanent hair dyes in neon colours like bright pink and red etc, however despite being called ‘permanent’ these do tend to fade over time and don’t tend to give the truly neon results that semi-permanent dyes can. Any product that contains chemicals such as permanent dyes and bleach can damage the hair if used incorrectly or too often.  At this time we do not sell any permanent hair dyes.

  • Special Effects are Closing

    Special Effects are Closing

THIS IS AN OLD POST FROM 2019 – SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE STILL CLOSED!
Our latest post with possible alternative brands/colours can be seen here: Special Effects Alternatives

Yes, sadly the rumours are true, Special Effects are closing!
We found this out late last week but wanted to know more before posting and causing a hair dye stampede.

    Why Special Effects are closing:

Special Effects want to make it clear that they are chosing to close at this time and it ‘may’ not be forever.  They moved premises a couple of years ago and this caused a huge backlog in dye production which they were still playing catchup with.  Their new premises are now being sold which means another move and they simply cannot deal with yet another move and keep up with making their hair dye so decided to close while they decide what to do in the future.  I would like to stress that if they do decide to open up again then it will be at least a year or more as they would need to find new premises, set it up and then stock-up on colours.  They have us on their contact list and have assured me they will call when or if they know anymore, but for the time being they are definitely closed.

    What Colours are still available?

Another reason for our delay in posting this was to find out what colours they can still ship and we are pleased to say we have an order for over £20,000 placed with them.  This new order should arrive within 2-3 weeks and will include the following colours: Blood Red, Blue Haired Freak, Blue Mayhem, Burgundy Wine, Candy Apple Red, Cherry Bomb, Cupcake Pink, Deep Purple, Devilish, Fish Bowl, Hi-Octange Orange, Hot Lava, Iguana Green, Joyride, Nuclear Red, Purple Smoke, Sonic Green, Wildflower & Toner.

They have none of their other colours in stock and wont be making them again before they close.

  • Why Don’t You Sell Arctic Fox Hair Dye?

Why Don’t You Sell Arctic Fox Hair Dye?

Arctic Fox, Sparks, Splat and more!

We are often asked why we don’t sell Arctic Fox or Sparks or numerous other brands.  Below is a list of information we have on each of these brands and why we currently do not or cannot stock them in the Beeunique Shop.

    Arctic Fox
We are asked about Arctic Fox a lot but unfortuantely these dyes are not yet EU compliant so we cannot stock them.  This means that one or more of the ingredients is currently on the European Union banned ingredients list so they are not allowed to be sold in the UK or EU.  Arctic Fox say they are working on EU compliant dyes and we are in regular contact with them to find out when this will come into effect.  When it does, if the price is good then Arctic Fox is a brand we would love to stock on Beeunique.

    Sparks
We have contacted Sparks a few times over the years and have had the reply that they only allow their products to be sold to professional hair stylists i.e. to hairdressers etc and not to people who wish to retail them.  Unless Sparks change this policy we will not be able to stock this brand.

    Lunar Tides
Like Arctic Fox the ingredients in these dyes are not EU compliant and cannot be stocked or sold in the UK or EU at this time. They are hoping to amend their ingredients to be EU compliant soon.

    Limecrime
Unfortunately Lime Crime are not looking for any distributors for their dyes at this time. We also cannot confirm that their ingredients are fully UK compliant – this is the case for several brands made in the USA.

    Uberliss
Again, like Artic Fox, the ingredients in these dyes are not all EU compliant and cannot be stocked or sold in the UK or EU at this time. They are hoping to amend their ingredients to be EU compliant soon.

    Affinage
We have contacted Affinage and are currently waiting on a reply reagrding possibly stocking this brand. They do say on their website that they sell to Professional outlets like Hair salons only, so they may not allow it to be sold on a retail website.  We will update when we know more.

    Splat
Like Arctic Fox the ingredients in these dyes are not EU compliant and cannot be stocked or sold in the UK or EU at this time. We do not know if they are working towards an EU compliant version but will update on here when we know more.

    Lunatik
Again, like Artic Fox, the ingredients in these dyes are not EU compliant and cannot be stocked or sold in the UK or EU at this time. They are hoping to amend their ingredients to be EU compliant soon.

Pulp Riot (Added to blog May 2019)
There has been a lot of talk in the hair dye community about this dye coming to the UK this month – yes, this is true however it is not for general retail sale.  Pulp Riot have marked their product as For Salon Use only and therefore retailers cannot legally buy it to sell in shops or online. Only hairdressers and trained professionals can purchase and use this product.

This information on this blog is correct as of May 2019 and we will update this page as and when we receive new information from the manufacturers.

    How can you help?
With all the brands like Arctic Fox who are unable to be sold due to non EU compliance then you can contact them direct regarding this.  The more customers in the EU who contact them, the more demand they see, then hopefully the quicker they will impliment these changes.  Please contact these brands direct through their website or Social Media pages if you would like to see them EU compliant.

At this time we DO sell Special Effects, Manic Panic, Directions, Crazy Color, Adore, Pravana, Stargazer, Via Natural, Hermans and Rebellious Hair Dyes on the Beeunique website
