Hair & Bleach How To Guides
Although rare some people can have allergic reactions to products – even something they have used before. It is always advisable to do a skin sensitivity test before using any cosmetic product to check against adverse reactions. Please always follow skin test instructions on any cosmetic product you buy.
A rough guide to doing a Sensitivity Test would be:
Clean a small area (inside the arm tends to be the most common area used) then apply a small amount of the Semi-Permanent hair dye to the area. Cover with a sticking plaster and leave for approx 48 hours. Although an allergic reaction is very rare, if you experience severe pain, nausea, headaches etc rinse of dye immediately and consult a doctor. If there is no reaction after the 48 hours it should be fine to use the product, but bear in mind that a reaction could still happen although this is rare. Note – Adverse reactions include redness, raised skin, itching, blisters etc, and in more severe cases nausea, headache etc – if any unusual symptoms occur discontinue use of the product and consult a Doctor
A strand test should give an indication of the final colour and also check the brand’s suitability for your hair type/porosity. Please always try a strand & sensitivity test on any cosmetic product you buy even if it is something you have used previously.
A rough guide to doing a Strand Test would be:
Snip a few hairs from the back or your head (or any other area where it won’t be noticed). Secure the hairs using tape. Coat these hairs with the hair dye (or alternatively dip the hair into the bottle of dye to cover it). Follow the instructions on the hair dye packet as to length of time to leave dye on the hair and then rinse as normal. If you normally shampoo / condition hair after dyeing it then you should to the same with this strand test to see more realistic results. After this you should examine the strand fully to check for any damage / colour inconsistency etc. If you are happy with the results then proceed with using your hair dye as normal. Note – you should never use these semi-permanent hair dyes on hair that has been conditioned as this can prevent the hair dye ‘sticking’ to the hair.
Although they may work with other dyes the following hints are for the Semi Permanent Hair Dyes sold on Beeunique – these dye fading/removal tips may not work for everyone!
Bleaching: Obviously this is the most well known way to remove dye from your hair, however the more you bleach the more damage you can do to your hair. Therefore the information below gives alternative less-harmful ways to remove semi-permanent dye from the hair
Shampooing: Shampoo hair as often as possible -anti- dandruff control, dish soap and clarifying shampoos generally cause colour to fade faster, Clarifying shampoos are particularly good as they remove any build up of styling products etc on the hair that might be stopping the colour from washing out. Using these too often can dry out your hair so remember to condition well afterwards.
Hot Water: Rinsing hair in hot water after shampooing opens hair cuticles and can allow colour to fade faster (use as hot as your can bear without scalding yourself).
Soap Cap / Bleach Bath: A soap cap is diluted bleach – 1 part bleach powder + 1 part developer + 2 parts shampoo. This can damage your hair as it contains bleach so be careful and check regularly, however it should be less harmful to your hair than full bleach. More info on Soapcaps can be found on our Forum here: Soapcap / Bleach Bath
Colour Stripper: A colour stripper does not bleach your hair but it should remove any colour that is on your hair and bring your hair close to its natural colour. Development time could range from 20 minutes to over an hour depending on your hairs dyed colour and condition – always follow the manufacturers instructions for use. Note: Colour Strippers are mainly designed for use on permanent dyes so results can vary when used on semi-perm hair dyes however some removal of the colour should be visible when using these.

Basic information on how to use semi permanent hair dyes can be seen in our Dyeing Your Hair Guide
s not always necessary to bleach your hair before using these semi-permanent hair dyes as some of the deeper colours may show up on unbleached hair, however for a really good vibrant colour it is recommend these dyes be used on lightened or naturally pale hair. Trying to use a light shade of dye on dark hair will do nothing much so don’t waste your time and money trying this.
Semi-Permanent Hair Dyes will normally last less time on unbleached hair and also give more of a sheen/glow to the hair rather than a vibrant dyed colour. The hair dyes we currently sell are not permanent dyes that change the hair colour but instead simply cover or coat the hair with dye and therefore should not damage your hair. As with all the dyes we sell please try a sensitivity test prior to use, although any reaction may be unexpected you are advised to try sensitivity tests when using any new hair or cosmetic item.
The following section in our Hair Dye Gallery shows actual hair dye results on Dyeing Unbleached Hair.

Hair Dye & Bleach Questions
We have created a blog page all about which hair dyes are animal friendly and/or vegan friendly. This page will be updated as and when we receive new information from the suppliers and/or manufacturers of these hair dyes. Are your hair dyes Animal Friendly?
When on the hair the length of time the semi-permanent dyes last depends on base colour, porosity of hair, condition of hair, dye used etc and can be from a few days to a few months. In each hair dye product section we give a rough indication of how long the colours may last, this can vary greatly from person to person and we advise to always try a strand test first to determine hair dye result and how long the dye is likely to stay vibrant. Our Hair Dye Help section gives hints and tips on how to maintain the hair dye colour.
If unopened Semi-Perm Hair Dyes we currently sell last at least 30 months from date of manufacture(shelf-life). Once opened these dyes should last a minimum of 12 months with no adverse reactions to hair providing they are securely sealed after each use and stored away from extreme heat or cold and sunlight etc. With some brands the dye results may vary the longer the dye is left from initial use/opening and all dyes should be mixed/stirred before using again as some colour pigments may separate over time.
A full list of ingredients of the current hair dyes and bleach kits we sell can be seen here – Hair Dye Ingredients. The ingredients shown are based on the manufacturers packaging at the time of adding this information to our website, it is advised to always check the label/tub prior to use incase of any changes or updates of the ingredients.
Basic instructions for the dyes we sell can be seen here – Hair Dye Instructions. It is advised to always check the label/tub prior to use incase of any changes or updates of the instructions.
The amount of dye needed depends on the base colour, hair porosity, hair condition, hair thickness and hair length of the individual so we cannot say for sure how much each person would need but as a general guide shoulder length hair tends to use around one bottle/tub. If you think you may need more than one bottle it is always best to buy the most you think you will need to avoid running out of dye part way through. If you purchase one of the 12 month dyes (see the section How Long Do The Hair Dyes Last Unopened?) you can use the remainder of any unused dye at a later date to top up the colour or for dyeing root re-growth etc.
The colour swatches on our website are intended as a guide only and the final colour/vibrancy will depend on the base colour, porosity and condition of your hair amongst other things. Semi Permanent colours will tend to be more vibrant on bleached / pre-lightened or fair hair. Although these are popular brands of hair dye we cannot guarantee that they will work for everyone – it is always advised to do a strand test first to check actual results before using any product. We cannot refund or replace a dye once it has been used if you have not received the results you were hoping for.
PPD’s are usually found in permanent hair dyes and not semi-permanent ones like Manic Panic, Crazy Color etc. Therefore the semi-permanent and temporary dyes we sell should be fine for people with a PPD Allergy but still, as with any hair dye permanent or semi, try a skin/sensitivity test prior to use just to check you are not allergic to anything else in the dye. Further information on PPD can be found in the Hair Dye Forum – PPD Information here. Information on hair dyes and PPD from the Allergy UK website can be seen here: PPD Allergy UK Website and here: PPD Allergy Infomation.
You can change these colours as much as you want as they don’t contain the same harmful chemicals that some permanent dyes can and therefore there is no minimum period of time you have to wait before re-dyeing your hair another colour. If you are dyeing the same colour just ensure hair is washed and dried as normal (without using conditioner) and then apply the dye as normal. If you are dyeing a different colour then the existing colour on your hair and the new colour may mix giving an unexpected different result so try a strand test first as you may need to fade or bleach out the original colour first.
We have a large Hair Dye Hints & Tips section which lists things that may help to pro-long your hair colour as well as other handy information such as clean up tips and bleaching.
The colour of the hair dye in the tub or bottle is not necessarily the colour result that can be achieved, some dyes can look very dark when condensed in the bottle but give a lighter result on the hair for example. You should always try a strand test before using the product to see what the colour result on your hair will look like and our Hair Dye Gallery can give some indication of what other results were using these colours. Please note the dye pigments can separate in the tub or bottle and we always recommend using a tint bowl and brush (or similar) to stir/mix the dyes fully before using to ensure an even mix of the colour.
Colour results can vary each time you use the same colour due to various reasons, these include: your base colour may have been slightly darker or lighter, hair condition has changed, hair porosity is changed, some colour remaining from previous dye on the hair, the dye was left on the hair for longer or shorter than last time etc. Due to the large amount of conditions that can affect the final result we always advise customers to try a strand test prior to using the dye to check the results are what were expected. From time to time the manufacturers of the brands may also change their colours or alter the amount of each colour pigment etc and again due to this the colour results cannot be guaranteed to be the same after each use.

No, Although these types of dyes are often referred to as Vegetable Dyes they are in fact Semi-Permanent Dyes. More information on these can be seen in our Hair Dye Types.
As the semi permanent dyes we sell coat the hair rather than permanently dye it as ‘normal’ coloured box dyes do, we don’t know of any manufacturer who has managed to make these vibrant colours in a truly permanent formula. Some companies sell deeper colours such as dark purple or red as a permanent box dye however these are unlike the dyes we sell and will contain chemicals that could damage your hair, they also don’t come in the large neon ranges that semi permanent dyes can. If you know of any manufacturer who claims to be selling permanent neon dyes please let us know and if they work we will try to stock them in future.
Beeunique currently sell a range of Directions & Crazy Color shampoos & conditioners.
